The Mathematics Organizations listed on the KCM website provide many professional learning opportunities through annual conferences and workshops. Each organization’s website (accessible via the above link) gives information about upcoming opportunities and events.
 

Other Kentucky Organizations

 

Kentucky Education and Special Education Cooperatives serve regions of Kentucky (groups of counties) by offering a variety of professional learning opportunities for K-12 teachers and administrators. 

Partnership Institute for Math and Science Educational Reform (PIMSER)
PIMSER offers professional learning opportunities in Mathematics through their Outreach Programs: Everyone Passes Algebra; EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT Workshop; Math Leadership Support Network; Math & Science Leadership Institute; Network for New Math Teachers; One to One Math; and the Rational Numbers Project.
 

Other National Organizations

 

Teachers Teaching with Technology (T3)
T3 offers training and support for teachers who want to learn how to use TI Graphing Calculator technology in their classrooms.

Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS)
The MOEMS website lists professional development opportunities for teachers interested in being PICOs (Persons-in-charge-of-Olympiads).  The Art of Problem-Solving Community also hosts an MOEMS online discussion forum. 

Staff Development for Educators
The SDE sponsors professional learning events and conferences, provides on-site training to educators, and offers learning opportunities online on a wide variety of topics.  Training sessions on how to implement Singapore Math are available. 

U.S. Department of Education Teacher-to-Teacher Workshops
The U.S. Department of Education sponsors sessions of workshops which include math topics at different locations around the country.  Session materials, such as lessons to use with students, are posted on their website by subject area. 

Measured Progress
The Measured Progress organization offers assessment products and customized professional development workshops on assessing student learning for grades K-12.  One of their products is problem-bank of math and reading problems for students in grades 3 – 8.
 

Teacher Institutes

 

Park City Mathematics Institute (PCMI)
Sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Study, PCMI is focused on providing learning opportunities in math content and pedagogy for educators at the secondary and post-secondary level as well as researchers and students at the post-secondary level.

“Algebra Through Function” Academy
This summer academy trains high school teachers and college instructors in the Functional Approach to Algebra.  It is periodically offered through the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and run by the director, Ed Laughbaum, and Debbie Crooker, a professor at Appalachian State University. 

Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy
Teachers of grades 3-5 may apply to be selected for this academy, a 1-week, intensive, all-expense paid summer training, which focuses on integrating math and science in fun and interesting ways. 

Kentucky Aviation Teacher Institutes
Teachers of grades 5-12 may register to attend this institute, in which they will investigate concepts such as time/speed/distance relationships, forces and motion, and navigation skills through inquiry-based problem-solving.  An optional airplane ride during the institute is included!
 

Online Learning

 

Art of Problem-Solving (AoPS) Community
The Art of Problem-Solving Community hosts online discussion forums and online classes called Math Jams for accelerated math students and their teachers.  Excellent course materials for students seeking more challenging mathematics can be found at this site.  Teachers seeking ways to challenge students or engage gifted students will want to check this out! 

Annenberg Media
The Annenberg Institute has created and made available a wealth of professional learning materials for K-16 teachers.  Reading materials, videos, facilitator guides, and participant guides for a wide variety of topics are all accessible through their website.

The Math Forum
The Math Forum offers professional learning opportunities through online courses, customized face-to-face sessions, or a combination of the two.  This group seeks opportunities for extended collaboration rather than one-time events and builds their customized programs around three areas:  student problem-solving, math software tools, and making full use of internet resources to improve teaching and networking.

PBS TeacherLine
This website offers many online professional development courses in mathematics, technology and other areas for grades K-12.

e-Learning KY
P-12 Kentucky educators may register for free online classes, made available by the Kentucky Department of Education. 

CE Credits Online
CE Credits Online offers online courses for K-12 teachers and administrators.

The National Staff Development Council (NSDC)
The purpose of the NSDC is “ensuring that every educator engages in effective professional learning every day so every student achieves.”  This website contains a wealth of information and resources for educators involved in structuring professional learning opportunities for teachers. 

KDE Resources for Professional Development Coordinators
