Words of Wisdom

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running."

Learn how to teach fractions for understanding using the Rational Numbers Project (RNP) materials.

Target audiences: primary, intermediate, middle and high school regular and special ed teachers (see sessions described below).

Overview:  The Rational Numbers Project (RNP) developed at the University of Minnesota through funding from the National Science Foundation takes a conceptual approach to teaching fractions versus the procedural approach that textbooks provide. The RNP philosophy is that extended periods of time invested with manipulative materials developing concepts, order and equivalence ideas are needed before students can operate on fractions in a meaningful way. The book of fraction lessons that participants will receive is a product of several years of working with children in classrooms with this philosophy.

Participants will learn how to organize instruction using multiple concrete models and applying fraction ideas to real world situations so students develop a deep, conceptual understanding of fractions. The manipulatives used in the training provide students with hands-on experience, while the lessons allow students opportunities to reflect on their thinking about fractions as they try to make sense of the formal symbolic system.

The PIMSER P-12 Math and Science Outreach unit at the University of Kentucky is offering 3 levels of this training; one for primary teachers, and the others for regular and special ed teachers of grades 4-9.  See below:

AdvanceKentucky

In partnership with the National Mathematics and Science Initiative (http://www.nationalmathandscience.org/), the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (http://www.kstc.com/) is seeking math teachers interested in participating in the AdvanceKentucky initiative, which aims to increase student participation and success in AP courses by focusing on “Laying the Foundation” in Grades 6 - 11.

.pdf - Program Description Document

.pdf - Application information (deadline: May 15th) and Training Dates

Briefly, AdvKy-using NMSI's model-has a goal of accelerating students' participation and success in AP courses in math, science and English (MSE) to help increase the pipeline of college-ready high school graduates. The NMSI program is emulating a model created by AP Strategies, Inc. (APS) that has been very successful, especially with students in underserved populations.  Please see the 3 graphs on the attached Program Description that show 10 years of growth experienced by 10 APS schools.   These schools, much like KY's schools, have considerable challenges-each of these schools has a very high percentage of students who are members of underserved populations (particularly free and reduced lunches eligible and minority).

An important part of this model is to better prepare pre-AP students grades 6-11) for the rigor of AP and college courses.  APS uses a program called "Laying the Foundation" (LTF) for this purpose. AdvKy plans to introduce LTF training for Pre-AP teachers beginning in the 08/09 school year, initially to the participating schools.  We anticipate that non-AdvKy schools will be able to participate as well.

To make this happen, candidates for becoming certified LTF trainers must be identified and selected to attend training in Dallas this summer (July 8-14).  Attached is a flyer for distribution to colleagues and
Math Coaches with relevant experience, and who can become KSTC contractors, able to devote time during the school year and summer months to conducting LTF training in their subject area at various regional sites (to be determined).

Online Professional Development Research Study: 5th and 8th Grade Math Teachers

Boston College is conducting a research study as part of a US Department of Education Ready to Teach grant, the e-Learning for Educators Initiative. The primary goal of the overall initiative is to establish an effective and sustainable model of online professional development for teachers. Part of the initiative involves conducting a large-scale research study which will evaluate the effects of online professional development on teacher knowledge, teacher practices, and student achievement.

We invite all 5th grade Math and 8th grade Math teachers of traditional classrooms to participate in this study! The study spans three school semesters (Spring 2007, Fall 2007, and Spring 2008). Participating teachers will be randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group. Some details are listed below and all details can be found at our website: http://www.bc.edu/efe

Teachers assigned to the experimental group will participate in a series of three online professional development workshops, free of charge. These workshops were specifically designed for this study, focus on both content knowledge and pedagogical practices, and offer information and techniques that you can directly apply in the classroom. The workshops are targeted towards subjects where students tend to struggle and are based on state and national standards. Teachers completing the workshops are eligible for graduate credits. Teachers assigned to the control group will also have access to these same courses, free of charge, once the study completes (June 2008).

Teachers in both the experimental group and the control group will also take a series of online surveys and administer a series of online tests to their students. Teachers receive instant feedback about student performance from these tests, which can be used to inform future instruction. Additionally, teachers will receive a $300 stipend upon completion of all surveys and tests.

We support your efforts to improve teacher quality and student learning and strongly encourage you to participate. The workshops begin in May and July, and the first round of surveys and tests must be completed before the workshops begin, so sign up now! Please visit the research study website for more information or to register for the study http://www.bc.edu/efe

Gather your colleagues at your school for the workshop to share ideas among yourselves while sharing with fellow teachers around the globe. For only $95 per computer hook up, one site license will allow your group to get together in one room and join in via computer and speakerphone with other groups of teachers like you.

These E-Workshops provide an interactive overview of grade-band specific expectations as defined in NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. Using selected activities from NCTM’s Navigations series and NCTM’s journals, the E-Workshops will provide insights into ways of using these materials in the classroom.

Registration fee of $95.00 includes one computer sign in for your entire group. This allows the group to gather in one room and discuss the ideas and how they can be implemented across the board, not just in one teacher's classroom.
