Words of Wisdom

"If you can keep your head about you when all about you are losing theirs, it's possible you just haven't grasped the situation."

Goals for Training and Support

The Kentucky Center for Mathematics supports Mathematics Coaches by providing high quality training and sustained support for professional growth in:

·         Developing a coach’s identity as a mediator of thinking for individuals and for groups.

·         Developing a coach’s capacity to effectively balance their roles of coach, consultant, and collaborator.

·         Developing a coach’s facilitative skills and leadership abilities in order to support change within their schools and/or districts.

Our Training Partners
Mathematics coaches work to create the culture of professional learning and reflection on practice that are necessary for teachers to make the school-wide improvements in math instruction that result in increased student achievement.  The coach’s role is complex and demanding, requiring knowledge and expertise in mathematics teaching, interpersonal relationships, adult learning, and systemic change.  The coach’s role is also continuously evolving as coaches navigate change within their school organizations and grow professionally in their partnerships with teachers.  We’ve joined with the quality training programs below to prepare and support our coaches in this challenging and rewarding work.

  • The Center for Cognitive Coaching will conduct a variety of Proficiency Modules for our sophomore and our senior coaches.  Cognitive Coaching is the coaching model we have adopted in Kentucky for our mathematics coaches.

  • The Center for Research on Learning will conduct a two-day course on Coaching Classroom Management for our sophomore coaches.

  • Edvantia will conduct a three-day course for sophomore coaches called Questioning and Understanding to Improve Learning and Thinking (QUILT).
