Below you will find information about books, organizations, and other sites devoted to undergraduate mathematics. Each entry contains a brief description and link for further information. All descriptions here are taken from references to the resources (websites, book jackets, reviews).

Many of the resources listed here are from the Mathematical Association of America, a professional organization dedicated to collegiate mathematics. Another key postsecondary organization is the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

Mathematical Education of Teachers

AMTE: Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators website

AMTE is the largest professional organization devoted to the improvement of mathematics teacher education—it includes over 1000 members devoted to the preservice education and professional development of K-12 teachers of mathematics.


KCTM: Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics website

KCTM has a membership of approximately 1,000 members, who serve Kentucky students in kindergarten through college. We are affiliated with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and have several organizations who are affiliated with us. The Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics believes all students have the capacity to become mathematically competent and confident when provided a rigorous and challenging mathematical program supported by high expectations. Teachers who attend our conferences come away invigorated and ready to take ideas back to their classrooms.


NCTM: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics website

NCTM is a public voice of mathematics education supporting teachers to ensure equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students through vision, leadership, professional development and research.


SIGMAA MCST: Special Interest Group of the Mathematical Association of America on Circles for Students and Teachers website

The goal of this SIGMAA is to give math circles – both student math circles and math teacher circles – greater visibility and a permanent presence in the mathematical and educational landscape. This SIGMAA will support MAA members who share an interest in developing, supporting and running math circles and will facilitate vertical integration of elementary, middle and high school students, their teachers, undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty up through high-level research mathematicians.


Teacher Preparation Committee of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges website

The main focus of the Teacher Preparation Committee is to help insure better preparation of teachers of mathematics at all levels. Subtopics or potential subgroups for this committee include: elementary teacher preparation, secondary teacher preparation, and mathematics curriculum for teachers.
 

 
Teaching College Mathematics

This book is a basic "how-to" guidebook for teaching at the college and university level. The essentials of course preparation, lecture and laboratory design, testing and assessment, class management and discipline, and writing and research are outlined. The author also discusses further some specific details related to teaching college students and bridging the gap between teaching and research.


Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses link

Fink provides several conceptual and procedural tools that will be invaluable for all teachers when designing instruction. He takes important existing ideas in the literature on college teaching (active learning, educative assessment), adds some new ideas (a taxonomy of significant learning, the concept of a teaching strategy), and shows how to systematically combine these in a way that results in powerful learning experiences for students. Acquiring a deeper understanding of the design process will empower teachers to creatively design courses for significant learning in a variety of situations.

These teaching situations are the Case Studies of the title. ... Each case raises a variety of pedagogical and communication issues that may be explored either individually or in a group facilitated by a faculty member. Teaching notes for such a facilitator are included for each Case in the Faculty edition.


Boston College Mathematics Case Studies Project (BCCase) website

This website is devoted to the materials Boston College have developed for math graduate students who are serving as TAs or instructors. It includes information for faculty who are considering using these materials with their students. The materials we have created have been published jointly by the AMS and the MAA in the CMBS series Issues in Mathematics Education. Though the project has been completed, a community of case study users is available to provide information to you on using the BC Case materials.


How to Teach Mathematics link

Eschewing generalities ... Krantz addresses issues such as preparation, presentation, discipline, and grading. He also emphasizes specifics -- from how to deal with students who beg for extra points on an exam to mastering blackboard technique to how to use applications effectively.

This is the revised edition of the teaching guide written by Bruce Reznick for the 1984 graduate student orientation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Sections include Preparing, Lecturing, Grading, and Coping.


Teaching First: A Guide for New Mathematicians link

Rishel, T. (2000). Washington, DC: Mathematical Association of America.

Rishel draws on nearly forty years of teaching experience to address the ?nuts and bolts? issues of teaching college mathematics. This book is written for the mathematics TA or young faculty member who may be wondering jut where and how to start.


MathQUEST/MathVote: Resources for Clickers and Classroom Voting in Collegiate Mathematics website

Voting in Collegiate Mathematics.  This page contains resources for classroom voting in mathematics, also known as ConcepTests for Peer Instruction or "Clicker Questions".


WeBWorK website

WeBWorK is an open source Perl-based system for delivering individualized homework problems over the web. By providing students with immediate feedback as to the correctness of their answers, students are encouraged to make multiple attempts until they succeed. By individualizing problems, cheating is discouraged. By providing instructors with real-time statistics, lesson plans can be customized to better serve students.


IMathAS website

IMathAS is an Internet Mathematics Assessment System. In essence, it is a very light Course Management System (CMS).

National Numeracy Network (NNN) website

The National Numeracy Network offers its members a network of individuals, institutions and corporations united by the common goal of quantitative literacy for all citizens. The website includes a list of quantitative literacy projects.


SIGMAA QL: Special Interest Group of the Mathematical Association of America on Quantitative Literacy website

SIGMAA QL aims to provide a structure within the mathematics community to identify the prerequisite mathematical skills for quantitative literacy and find innovative ways of developing and implementing QL curricula. We also intend to assist colleagues in other disciplines to infuse appropriate QL experiences into their courses and hope to stimulate the general national dialogue concerning QL.
